Abstract
The strategy for modernizing Russian education calls for addressing several key tasks, including establishing an objective assessment of school education to monitor the quality of the educational process and make the necessary pedagogical adjustments. Young people’s readiness for contemporary life and work has become a major concern both worldwide and in Russia. In this context, high-quality preparation of students at teacher training universities—tomorrow’s teachers, especially mathematics teachers—is particularly important. At the Faculty of Mathematics of Ural State Pedagogical University, 154 second- through fifth-year mathematics students completed a series of tests using Unified State Examination–type tasks in Algebra and the Foundations of Analysis. Statistical analysis of the results revealed several problems and helped outline ways to improve students’ education in elementary mathematics.
