Mission and editorial vision

Alma Mater (Higher School Herald) is Russia's oldest scholarly journal devoted to higher education, published since 1940. Its history spans several eras in the development of Russian higher education, and for more than eight decades its pages have provided a forum for professional discussion of education—its traditions, values and future.

Our mission is to connect fundamental scholarship with the real challenges facing education, contribute to a deeper understanding of the strategic development of Russian higher education, and foster meaningful dialogue between researchers and practitioners. The journal introduces its readers to different approaches to the development of higher education in Russia and around the world, maintaining continuity with established scholarly traditions while remaining open to new ideas.

We publish original and translated research articles, analytical papers and bibliographic reviews. We value scholarly novelty, intellectual independence and well-supported conclusions. The guiding principle shared by the journal and its authors is to combine high academic standards with clear and accessible writing.

  • history of education;

  • socialisation of young people;
  • development of higher education and the academic environment.
