Abstract

The article analyzes foreign experience in implementing the educational format ‘Service Learning’ into the system of higher sports education and identifies opportunities for its adaptation in Russian universities. The relevance of the study is driven by the launch of a homonymous module in Russian universities in 2023 and the need for methodological substantiation, particularly in the training of sports personnel. Based on an analysis of German academic sources, curricula, and empirical studies, the article examines the history of Service Learning in Germany, the structural components of the course, and specific examples of project implementation at leading German sports universities (Cologne, Halle-Wittenberg, Tübingen, Würzburg). It is shown that the German model presupposes a cross-cutting educational format, ECTS credits, long-term partnerships with community and sports organizations, and a wide range of applied project areas (inclusive sports, migrant integration, health promotion, support for sports clubs). In turn, the Russian approach is based on the concept of social design, emphasizes the unity of professionalism and civic engagement, and is at an initial stage of implementation. The conclusion is drawn about the feasibility and advisability of using the German experience to improve the Russian ‘Service Learning’ module in sports universities for the development of students’ professional, social, and civic competencies.
