Implementation of a practice-oriented approach in teaching students how to design children’s furniture

Abstract

This article describes an approach to teaching students based on a practice-oriented methodology. While this approach is quite common in educational practice, it remains relevant and is implemented depending on the subject matter and the specific conditions under which it is applied. It is an important component of design-based teaching methodology.

In design education, fostering a practice-oriented mindset is a very complex task for the instructor, one that is successfully addressed when the need for this approach is shaped by social practice and has social significance.

As part of their coursework — but under conditions that closely mirrored real-world professional practice — the students were tasked with a rather complex challenge: to design furniture for childcare facilities that would be safe, multifunctional, durable, and relatively inexpensive.

The collaboration between faculty and students with staff at preschool institutions — who were deeply committed to the well-being and comfort of young children — created a positive emotional atmosphere and imbued the students’ designs with not only practical significance but also personal meaning. Instruction was carried out using a methodology based on a practice-oriented approach to design.
