Russian language and Russian speaking education in the Republic of Lithuania

Abstract

Based on censuses from the Department of Statistics of the Government of Lithuania, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports of Lithuania, the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, and expert assessments, the article highlights the trends in the functioning of the Russian language in the Republic of Lithuania during the Soviet period and at present. Particular attention is paid to the use of the Russian language in Lithuanian kindergartens, schools, colleges and universities. The demand of Lithuanian youth for Russian-language education in the Russian Federation is also analyzed. It is concluded that the space of the Russian language is being reduced in the Republic of Lithuania and a number of measures are proposed to support Lithuanian Russianists and the Russian language.
