Abstract
The current trend of development and formation of the phenomenon of academic rankings compels researchers to seek methodological tools that can be applied to the assessment of the rankings itself. One such method is to compare the ranking indicators with the major indicators of the education quality management system. According to ISO9000 standard the methodology of modern education quality management systems is based on the process approach. The term «process» means «a set of interrelated and interacting activities and resources, transforming “inputs” to “outputs”». Comparing the elements of the education quality management system process model with the principles of data selection and characteristics of the main indicators of the world rankings of leading universities, such as: ARWU ranking, Webometrics, THE-QS (QS-Times) and ReitOR, a classification of international universities rankings was proposed. It was proved that the classification attribute of the international universities rankings corresponds to the described profile of a university’s main activity: educational activity (THE-QS), research (ARWU), combined (ReytOR). This allows us to base the international universities rankings on a wide range of accumulated global experience at verification of the education quality and to determine the strategic complementary development of rankings and education quality management standards.
