Abstract
The article focuses on some questions on the current state of the autonomy of universities as a fundamental principle of university education. The authors came to a conclusion that despite the existing problems only with consistent implementation of the autonomy of higher educational establishments in Russia at the formation of a competitive education system becomes possible.
